What Is a Plantar Fibroma?

A plantar fibroma is a noncancerous or benign growth in the arch of the foot that slowly grows over time. It develops on the plantar fascia, the ligament that runs along the bottom of the foot and connects the heel to the toes. A fibroma appears as a small bump typically less than an inch in size, and can occur in one or both feet. Often, a plantar fibroma does not cause symptoms. However, a fibroma can cause pain and discomfort if it grows in size, and it may be especially painful if pressure is applied to the area. Some experts say genetics play a factor, but it is not clear what exactly causes plantar fibroma or why, there’s no known way to prevent its occurrence. If you suspect that you have a plantar fibroma, it is suggested that you seek the care of a podiatrist.

Types of Ankle Sprains

Ankle sprains occur as damage or a tear to the ligaments surrounding the ankle. Ankle sprains most commonly occur when the ankle is twisted inward (inversion), but they may also occur when the ankle twists outward (eversion). Sprains are categorized into three tiers. A first degree sprain is generally mild, and the ankle is weakened. A second degree sprain results in a swollen and bruised ankle, and walking can be difficult and painful. Sprained ankles that are unstable and unable to bear weight are considered to be third degree sprains. These sprains usually cause the whole ankle to swell, and the nerves and cartilage may be damaged as well. Those who have severely sprained their ankle should consult with a podiatrist. A podiatrist will make sure that the ankle has not been fractured and will provide options to stabilize the ankle to help it heal.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

Ankle sprains are the result of a tear in the ligaments within the ankle. These injuries may happen when you make a rapid shifting movement while your foot is planted. A less common way to sprain your ankle is when your ankle rolls inward while your foot turns outward.

What Causes a Lisfranc Injury?

The Lisfranc joint complex is composed of the five metatarsal bones, plus the tendons and ligaments that form the arch at the top of the foot. When the ligaments or tendons become sprained or the metatarsal bones get fractured, a Lisfranc injury occurs. The injury most commonly occurs when the foot is twisted while falling. These situations are common in sports such as football, when the foot is stepped on, twisted while pointing, or stepped on while facing down. Signs of a Lisfranc injury include swelling, tenderness, and pain at the top of the foot, and bruising may be present on the bottom of the foot as well. If you believe you are suffering from a Lisfranc injury, a podiatrist will need to examine the foot and possibly take X-rays in order to give a proper diagnosis. Common treatment methods include immobilization, ice and elevation, therapy, and in severe cases, surgery may be necessary. 

Ankle and foot injuries are common among athletes and in many sports. They can be caused by several problems and may be potentially serious. If the injury appears to be more serious, surgery might be required, such as arthroscopic or reconstructive surgery. Lastly, rehabilitation or therapy might be needed to gain full functionality in the afflicted area. Any discomfort experienced by an athlete must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.

Causes of Fungal Nail Infections

Fungal nail infections, also known as onychomycosis, can cause the nails to become thick, yellow, and crumbly. Fungal nail infections are usually not painful unless they become severe. Small cracks in the nail or the skin surrounding the nail allow for fungi to come into the nail and infect it. Those who have an injury to the nail, are diabetic, or have a weakened immune system, are said to be at a higher risk of developing a fungal nail infection. Fungi often thrive in warm, moist environments, such as locker rooms and public pools, and the fungi tend to spread to others while in these areas. Because antifungal medication or removal of the nail may be necessary to get rid of the infection fully, those who are experiencing a fungal nail infection should consult a podiatrist.
